Cut Your Cancer Risk
Take Action NOW!

15 Years ago, 1 out of every 15 women developed cancer. Today, it's 1 out of every 8!!! According to the National Institute of Cancer, there is strong evidence that cancer is linked to a high fat diet, poor digestion and elimination and Colon cancer is one of the leading killers today. One third of American women die from colon cancer. (more on this below: see Vital Health)

This news is so distressing to me that I had to make it the focus of this week's newsletter. First off I want to give you two things to do IMMEDIATELY to make a positive impact in your overall and specifically your Colon health:

1. Increase your fiber intake to 20-30 grams by increasing these High Fiber Foods
Use herbs and spices to taste, reduce salt. Beans , legumes, fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, whole grain breads, brown rice, old fashioned oats (no instant)

2. Increase Your Vegetable & Fruit
Tomatoes - Rich in lycopene, an antioxidant that gives tomatoes their red color. Also found in strawberries, pink grapefruit and guava.

Onions and garlic
Several studies in Japan and China suggest that consuming garlic may lower risk of stomach cancer. Garlic and Onions contain allylic sulfides, which are believed to protect the body against dangerous cancer causing carcinogens.

Strawberries
Significant source of the antioxidant glutathione, which boost the immune system. Right now they are ripe and juicy, be sure to wash them thoroughly before eating.

Broccoli, cabbage, bok choy, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts
Contains the phytochemical indole carbinol, which creates the production of protective enzymes against cancer.

Oranges
Contain vitamin C which blocks cancer causing chemicals called nitrosamines. They are also high in fiber and can help lower cholesterol.

Apples
Contain a chlorogenic acid that has shown to inhibit cancer growth in numerous studies. It is high in fiber and contains pectin, which can decrease your appetite. Apples are also good for reducing cholesterol in your body. I guess what that old saying is somewhat true. An apple a day could really keep the doctor away.

*** Note- make sure you always thoroughly wash your fruits and vegetables. Also buy organically grown whenever you can.

This week we are all going to focus on increasing the amount of Fruits, Vegetables and Fiber in our diets. Make a conscious effort each day in your food choices and let's reverse this trend and take back our health.

Weekly Fit Tip

How well you achieve your own happiness is the best measure of how well you are living your life and enjoying your relationships. Follow these steps to be happier and more fulfilled in everything you do…

LISTEN TO YOUR HEART
And your mix is changing continually. If you went to the same smorgasbord every day for a year, you probably would come back with a different plateful of food each time. Each day — sometimes each hour — only you can tell what it takes to make you happy. Therefore, the only way to judge whether a job, a relationship, an investment, or any decision, is right for you is to get in touch with your feelings and listen to your heart.

BE TRUE TO YOURSELF
You’re true to yourself only when you follow your inner light, when you listen to what Ralph Waldo Emerson called the “still, small voice within.” You’re being the very best person you can be only when you have the courage and the fortitude to allow your definition of happiness, whatever it may be, to be the guiding light of every part of your life.

MAKE HAPPINESS YOUR KEY MEASURE
You should make happiness the organizing principle of your life. Compare every possible action and decision you make against your standard of happiness to see whether that action would make you happier or unhappy. Soon, you will discover that almost all of the problems in your life come from choices that you have made or are currently making that do not contribute to your happiness.

PAY THE PRICE
Of course, there are countless times when you will have to do little things that don’t make you happy along the way toward those larger things that make you very happy indeed. We call this paying the price of success in advance. You must pay your dues.

Sometimes these interim steps don’t make you happy directly, but the happiness you achieve from attaining your goal will be so great that it totally overwhelms the temporary inconveniences and dissatisfactions you have to endure in order to get there.

ACTION EXERCISES
Here are three steps you can take immediately to put these ideas into action: First, accept that you deserve all the joy and happiness you can possibly achieve through your own efforts. Second, make your own happiness the chief organizing principle of your life and judge everything against that standard. Third, be willing to work hard and pay the price for the satisfaction and rewards you desire. Always go the extra mile and your success will be assured.

Healthy Recipe

Veggie Patties

Makes: 4 servings

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup shredded zucchini
  • 3/4 cup shredded carrots
  • 1 1/2 tsp. onion powder
  • 2 tsp. minced garlic
  • 15 oz. can nonfat black beans, mashed
  • 1/2 cup cooked rice
  • 1/4 cup egg substitute
  • 2 tbsp. nonfat bread crumbs
  • 1 tsp. Italian seasoning

Directions:

  • Preheat broiler on high heat. Line broiler pan with foil and lightly spray with nonfat cooking spray.
  • In a large bowl, combine all ingredients and mix well. (If mixture is too moist to shape, refrigerate 1 hour).
  • Shape mixture into 8 patties and place on prepared pan.
  • Broil 4 to 6 inches from heat for 5 to 6 minutes per side, until lightly browned.
  • Great as a sandwich on roll with lettuce, tomato, and deli style mustard or non/lowfat honey mustard sauce.

  • Cholesterol: 0 mg
  • Protein: 12 g
  • Carbohydrates: 34 g
