What You Think is What You'll Get

Did you notice that your mental images manifest in your physical world. Here are some questions to ask yourself this week...

1. How can I become lean, fit and healthy if all I think about is gaining weight and eating my favorite unhealthy food?

2. How can I possibly be successful if all I think about is failing or losing?

3. How can I possibly make more money if I focus on being in debt?

4. How can I possibly get a better job if your energy is spent thinking about how much I hate your current one?

When I was obese most of my mental brain energy was spent thinking about food. I would read those women's magazines that had food advertisements in the first 20 pages. I would stand in line at the supermarket waiting to buy my high fat sugar loaded items and salivate over the artistically designed foods in those beautiful gourmet magazines. When I watched television, I would sit completely still during every food commercial drooling all the while my mind was ingesting the images.

I became what I ingested, thought about and studied. I became a storehouse of excessive calories. I became what I thought about... fat! If I was ever to experience a change, I had to change. I had to methodically change;

  • My Mental Fuel (Fuel is energy) what you give energy to grows!
  • My Mental Images (instant brief snap shots of yourself)
  • My Thoughts (meditations of images)
  • My Mental Pictures (complete life like scenes of yourself)
  • My Choices (decisions) and ultimately
  • My Actions (every physical movement)

This week, determine yourself to THINK about and SPEAK about only the positive aspects of your life and your goals. What we think about comes about, so let's forget about what we don't want and start THINKING about what we DO want!

Weekly Fit Tip

Choose the right portions for you.

When deciding portion sizes for each meal, take a conservative approach. When preparing portions for myself, I always choose a little bit less than I think will satisfy my hunger and cravings. If I don’t get quite enough, I can always go back for more. But if I eat too much, it’s too late. I have already given my body more fuel than it can use for energy, and it will likely store the excess as fat.

Thus, a very important key to my success has been striking a good balance between eating enough to satisfy me and to provide my body with the nutrients it needs to improve my energy, increase muscle strength, and keep my metabolism revved up, etc. But I try not to eat so much that my body can turn the unused food into fat. This is a skill that takes practice, but once perfected, it will go a long way in helping you achieve the results you want.

A helpful hint: If you find that you haven’t served yourself enough food, before going back for seconds, take a breather. Give your body 10-20 minutes to decide if you really are still hungry or if you are already physically or psychologically satisfied. Also, don’t feel as if you must eat everything on your plate. When you start to feel comfortably full, stop and save the rest for another snack or meal. Instead of wolfing everything down, take time to savor your meal; you will notice signals of fullness much easier.

Eating more slowly, pausing throughout the meal, drinking a glass of water, and waiting before taking a second helping are not tricks to get you to eat less but rather ways for you to develop sensitivity in detecting hunger and fullness. They are strategies to encourage attentive eating that is more likely to be satisfying. Listen to your body with regard to physical and psychological hunger. This will help you distinguish between what you really want and what you think you want due to habit. Once you’ve mastered this skill, you will be greatly empowered…and get better results.

Healthy Recipe

Turkey Stew

Makes: 6 servings

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound boneless, skinless turkey breasts
  • 1 can tomato sauce
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried marjoram
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoons chicken bouillon granules
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 potatoes, diced
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 8 whole mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 celery stalk, sliced

Directions:

Rinse and cut all visible fat off of turkey. Cut turkey into bite-size pieces.

Coat a skillet with nonstick cooking spray (nonfat), and preheat over medium
heat. Add meat, and cook each side for 2-3 minutes.

Stir tomato sauce, water, pepper, herbs, bouillon granules, and Worcestershire
sauce into turkey, and bring to a boil.

Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 45-60 minutes.

Add the potatoes, carrots, onion, mushrooms, and celery to the meat. Cover and
simmer for 20-30 minutes.

Serving size: 1 1/2 cup
Calories: 265
Fat: 2 g
Cholesterol: 30 mg
Protein: 25 g
Carbohydrates: 40 g
Fiber: 5 g
Sodium: 355 mg
