South Beach Stinks

Victoria,
Thank you for your outstanding website. I found it through an article you wrote on water that was featured at Netscape. Congratulations for being in the top three with your article too. I am in the publishing field so I know how hard it is to be in the top five of any of the major search giants.

I thought I knew every guru on the market so how refreshing it is to be one of the last people on earth to become one of your minions. I have a question that is controversial. Because you were actually overweight and had hypoglycemia, I know that I will get an honest answer. Here goes…

I have been on a weight loss program for most of my life and I bought into the South Beach diet craze and did okay at first. But after getting all their foods, bars and snacks, not only did I gain some of the original weight I lost back and my cellulite is terrible. I am fatigued and cranky all the time now. In my eyes, the South Beach Marketing Machine has sunk its’ weight loss boat! Help Victoria, I’m sinking right along with it!

Hi Mary,
I don’t know the creators of the South Beach diet personally so I have no criticism of their program. I do know that when I wanted to lose pure fat and drop some pant sizes, there were some very specific principles I had to follow.

There was a time when I was obese and unhealthy, so I sympathize with you. There is nothing worse than reading some great marketing material on a program, pill or gadget and it sounds so enticing. You run to your wallet, grab your credit card and order the miracle money sucker that will become buried in your other pile of garbage gadgets.

I know how it goes. I had the audacity to buy a sauna suit that hooked up to a vacuum so that it would fill with hot air and “sweat off the pounds.” Remember those? I looked ridiculous! I looked like an overweight astronaut. I even bought a rolling pin because of an article I read about some skinny actress who said she used one to roll the fat off her thighs. She must have had a contract with Kitchen Kaboodle accessory store.

Mary, I was so desperate to lose weight and increase my energy, that I would do anything to get that life robbing fat off my body. I was hypoglycemic and was type two diabetic and I was hot mess. Here are some of the symptoms that you may be experiencing and your diet has change or you will never get rid of it and lose unsightly stored fat:

You may feel weak, drowsy, confused, hungry, and dizzy. You may suffer from frequent headaches, irritability, mood swings, severe PMS. trembling, sweating, rapid heart beat, and cold, clammy feelings are also signs of low blood sugar. In severe cases, a person can lose consciousness and even lapse into a coma.

Hypoglycemia in Diabetes

The most common cause of hypoglycemia is as a complication of diabetes. Diabetes occurs when the body cannot use glucose for fuel because either the pancreas is not able to make enough insulin or the insulin that is available is not effective. As a result, glucose builds up in the blood instead of getting into the body's cells.
Hypoglycemia is a common problem that can be controlled by the right Glycemic Index Regulated diet (see my Quick Start Diet Program). You can workout until you faint, but if you don’t get your food figured out, you will never have unlimited energy or lean muscular body.

We have been conditioned to count every calorie, but I have found that you can eat a low calorie diet and still not lose fat or reduce cellulite. I have found that a low-calorie, high-carbohydrate diet generates a series of biochemical signals in your body that will take you out of the balance, making it more difficult to access stored body fat for energy.

The result is a weight-loss plateau, beyond which you simply can't lose any more weight. . Your body has a limited capacity to store excess carbohydrates, but it can easily convert those excess carbohydrates into excess body fat.
Overeating carbohydrate foods can prevent a higher percentage of fats from being used for energy, which leads to a decrease in endurance and an increase in even more fat storage. Now that’s enough to make you crazy.

Diet Bars

I have found that many of the new diet bars that are supposed to be protein bars and meal replacements contain sugar, which is unhealthy and only worsens your hypoglycemia condition. You may even find yourself wanting more sugar after you eat them. Many even have refined sugar in their ingredient contents.

Diets high in refined sugars release more insulin into your blood stream thereby allowing less stored fat to be burned. High insulin levels also suppress two important hormones: glucagon and growth hormone. Glucagon promotes the burning of fat and sugar. Growth hormone is used for muscle development and building new muscle mass.

Insulin also causes hunger. As blood sugar increases following a carbohydrate meal, insulin rises with the eventual result of lower blood sugar. This results in hunger, often only a couple of hours (or less) after the meal. Your cravings, usually for sweets, are frequently part of this cycle, leading you to resort to snacking, often on more carbohydrates. Not eating makes you feel ravenous shaky, moody and ready to "crash." If the problem is chronic, you never get rid of that extra stored fat, and your energy is adversely affected.

So Mary, you are going to have to do what I did to reach your weight loss goal and get rid of the extra cellulite. You have to eat foods that are a part of the Glycemic Index Recommended groups and stay away from the ones that perpetuate your hypoglycemia.

You can do it. You can reach your ideal goal weight and wear all the cool clothes you have dreamed of when you go back to the real truth of living in a fat burning lifestyle that give you energy, balances your blood chemistry, manages your moods and help you lose stored fat and cellulite.

Bye Bye Thunder Thighs!

"It is a miracle that I am standing before you wearing these skimpy red Nike shorts with out a hint of self-consciousness or shame. Two years ago I would have never dreamed of this day. Healthy Recipe

Vegetable Chicken

Makes: 8 servings

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup carrots, sliced
  • 3/4 cup turnips, sliced
  • 2-1/4 pounds potatoes, sliced
  • 3 lemons, sliced
  • 6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 envelopes herb and garlic dry soup mix
  • 1/2 cup water

Directions:

  • Combine first 4 ingredients in a baking pan and top with chicken.
  • In a bowl, combine soup mix and water and pour over chicken and vegetables.
  • Bake uncovered at 375 degrees F for 50 minutes.

Nutritional Information:

  • Serving size: 1 chicken breast with mixture
  • Calories: 350
  • Fat: 4 g
  • Cholesterol: 70 mg
  • Protein: 30 g
  • Carbohydrates: 50 g
  • Fiber: 6 g
  • Sodium: 850 mg
Combine all ingredients. There are so few calories and nutritional info, it’s not necessary to list.
