I do core exercises twice a week now and I want to know more about how to get them defined and yes, flat. By spacing out my meals and eating less carbohydrates like you taught us is good, but I want more of what you say.... Detailing! Many Thank You's! "

First of all, there are many abdominal moves that help strengthen your core but those moves don't necessarily give you flat firm abs.

When I was in New York promoting one of my books I went to take a class called pilates. I had been reading about it in magazines and I was curious to see what all the hype was about. I went in, got my mat and sat next to a snooty lady who would not even say a cordial hello. Oh well, I thought, maybe she has had a bad morning.

There I sat on my borrowed mat from the studio smiling joyously waiting for the life altering "Core" based training class. The instructor came in dressed in a sexy see through one piece leotard. I thought wow, she looks fantastic.

She gracefully walked over to me and smugly asked, "Is this your first class in THIS studio?"

"Yes", I enthusiastically blurted out.

She said, without moving one muscle on her face, "tie your hair back so I can see your posture when we do the exercises."

I knew from that moment forward, I was in for it.

The class started and I was thinking the whole time, "I just want a flat midsection, I don't want to climb Mount Kilimanjaro." The class was interesting but I came to find out that instructor had been dancing her entire life. She had that body before she ever did one pilates exercise.

Now, I like pilates and I believe a "strong core" is important, but my big question for the fitness world is; what was before core?

Just because we learn something new does not mean we abandon everything that came before it.

When I was training for aerobic competitions my abs were ripped, I was strong in my center and my upper and lower back were strong and flexible. I had not even heard of pilates, but I was kicking butt in the competitions and at the beach! My abs were flat, tight and toned.

So what was before core? Before anyone ever heard of "core" there were dancer's workouts. These dancer's workouts were and still are fantastic muscle shaping abdominal exercises and specific postural alignment exercises that helps you get a flat tight midsection. Think about it.. have you ever see a dancer with a big overhanging beer belly? NO, they have the flattest firmest abs that rival any other competitive sports athlete, and remain supple and flexible in all their movements.

This is exactly why I created Ab Lab, the science of a firm flat sexy midsection. My goal was to teach the principles I had learned from my dance background to sculpt a great body yet be functionally strong. In this video I incorporate a variety of exercises from different fields of movement including dance and strength training so that you can sculpt, define and detail you flat firm midsection. You don't need a bodybuilders "six pack" abs, to have a tight flat midsection that looks awesome in a two piece!

Another thing I like to do for my midsection is taking Herbal Baths. When I was getting ready for body build shows and competitions, we had little a secret for tightening our skin and losing the excess water and trapped salts that hide in our skin and can blur muscle definition or worse... show up as cellulite. We would fill a bath tub with hot water, as hot as we could sit in without burning our ladies' private parts. Then we would put two cups of a special ground spice in the water and get in and soak for one hour. (I'm purposefully not telling you which one because I DON'T want you to try it!)

That was then, but now we actually have the perfect blend of herbs to soak in that is safe, effective and yields even better results when done regularly. This process can be done as body wraps as well, but I find it easier and more convenient to soak in the tub with candles, a great book or music with calming sounds of nature playing during my bath. (see the side bar on the left for more information on how I use Herbal Baths)

Here is a one of my secrets to help you start getting your very own flat sexy midsection.

Body Alignment Tip:
Breathing and Hollowing
is a technique I teach that focuses on "shaping" your abdominal wall. If you don't breathe correctly at the right time and hollow your abdominal wall, you can develop a muscular pooch in the lower region of your abdominal muscles instead of the flat hollowed out midsection we are shooting for. AHHHHHHHHH! Don't let that happen to you!

Let me say it again... your stomach can actually continue to stick out even when doing crunches! Abdominal exercises performed incorrectly can make your stomach stick out even more than it did before you start your program. It's more than a matter of simply lying on the floor and crunching. Or jumping on that ab machine and going to town. NO, You have to train your muscles in the way that you want them to look. My Maximum Abs DVD goes into detail on the precise movement for hollowing and concaving to give you the flattest midsection possible all the time, not just when you suck it in!

Here's what you do:

  • Lay on your back on the floor with your knees bent, feet flat on the floor. Arms at your side.

  • Inhale through your nose to the count 4.

  • As you exhale breathe out through your mouth to the count of 4 completely and empty your diaphragm until your abdominal wall collapses into the pelvic floor and it goes flat or hollow.

    Think about trying to make your belly button touch your spine as you exhale and pull your abdominal wall towards your back.

As you practice you will become able to control the hollowness of your abs. As you do you will automatically be developing a flat midsection.

Once you master this technique, apply it when using your favorite abdominal crunch exercises. Before beginning the crunch, perform your breathing exercise, then, with your midsection flat and hollow, begin your crunch. Timing your breathing is the next step, so in the beginning just try and perform one crunch per breath, and flatten your midsection every time. Over time you will train your midsection to remain flat, firm and sexy all the time!

How To Look Younger...
The Natural Way

We all want to look younger... but have you ever noticed how "anti aging" can practically be a full-time job?

If you want to learn about various ways to look younger... faster... and in a NATURAL way, then listen up.

For starters, learn how to avoid the most common mistakes many women make when they're "trying" to look younger.

Here are the top four:

1. Wearing Odd "Youthful" Colored Lipstick...
Lipstick colors are NEVER okay if they fall within the purple, black or orange color range. A lot of women attempt to wear these colors but they are aging and distracting to the face in every case.

The answer to wearing lipsticks that will make you look youthful and gorgeous is following a more natural color scheme. Apply colors that have a little brownish tone. Red should have a little blue in it so it does not appear orange.

While on the subject of lips, you may want to give the appearance of fuller lips by extending your lipstick or lip liner a bit above and below your natural lip line... BUT if you wear lip-gloss, be sure you are applying it only within the natural lip line, not outside.

This is a subtle yet effective method but it should not be overdone. When you extend over your natural lip line, "powder down" over it so that it will look more natural and blend in. If you don't, the unnatural lip line will be very noticeable.

2. Iridescent, Bright Colored, or Odd Eye Shadow...
Anything bold, overpowering or unnatural can easily age the face.

Even beyond the aging factor, eye coloring with these attributes can make the face unattractive and sometimes tacky.

No matter the shape or size of your eye, with proper make-up techniques and brands, they will look more youthful and beautiful. Remember, your eyes have to steal the show and you must not let eyeshadow overpower that.

A few simple rules to maintaining a youthful look are: wear natural colors, wear eyeliner to bring out the eyes, and wear mascara.

The best natural tones are soft off-white or light tones on the lids, brown or gray tones above the lids spread a little above the bone.

Never wear black eyeliner... dark brown looks just like black yet it gives a much softer, hued look.

The same goes for mascara except in this case, black is acceptable. If your own lashes aren't thick enough, try out fake lashes.

3. No Eye Make-Up...
So we've just discussed the dos and don'ts behind proper make-up but I want to be sure you understand that at least SOME eye make-up will make you look younger. It makes us appear alive and more glamorous.

If you aren't the type to wear a lot of make-up, try just wearing some mascara on your lashes or some light eye shadow. The look is rather manageable so long as you stay away from the colors we've banned!

4. No Blush, Too Little Blush, and Putting It In The Wrong Place...
One of the biggest problem areas among women is the "blush controversy."

Some women worry about putting too much on and others, not enough. There is a fine line between how much and how little to wear.

The other issue that a lot of us have is knowing just WHERE to put it. If you don't know, the placement of the blush on your face can make you look a lot older and downright tacky.

A nice alternative for older women is a cream blush or a cream rouge. This alternative provides more control for evenness, smoothness and allows you to control the amount your put on.

Never, ever wear a blush with glitter or shine in it as it really shows lines and wrinkles and may be too overpowering to the beauty of the face, skin and make-up.

When using blush or rouge, apply it where the sun would make your face appear naturally rosy. Apply the color to your cheekbones- somewhat over and under them- and taper off towards your ears. Also, add a little bit to the top of your forehead.

The one last area you should target is applying a small amount of blush to your neck to make it look like it belongs to your face... this will provide you with the ultimate glow.

The best saying that fits this topic is "you are as old as you feel"... but sometimes, we do need a little help along the way.

Healthy Recipe

Lentil Loaf

Makes: 8 slices

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups cooked lentils
  • 1-1/2 cups oatmeal
  • 3/4 cup onion, chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 3 cups tomato sauce
  • 2-1/4 teaspoons Italian seasoning

Directions:

  • Combine all ingredients in a bowl.
  • Mix thoroughly and press mixture into a loaf pan coated with nonstick cooking spray (nonfat).
  • Bake at 350 degrees F for 50 minutes.

"Hi, Victoria,

I have been exercising with your videos in my basement and thought I would drop you a line. I enjoy your videos immensely. I have the Dance Step one, and the two Technifunk ones. I am so glad you made these videos. I know they are older ones and I intend to find some new ones too. Right now, I am finally in better shape and need a very challenging work out. My one suggestion is that you make a longer video that is seriously challenging. I would love a 45 or 50 minute cardio segment.

I used to teach aerobics up until 1992. Then I started grad school, got married, and got out of shape. No excuse, of course. I also went through years of fertility treatments and finally it paid off. I have a 3 year old now. I am really working on getting into great shape again. I use Cybex in the gym 3 days a week--full body. I know what I am doing. However, I could not release body fat until I started to do your videos. I knew I needed cardio, but it is hard to fit it all in. I am limited to one hour child care at the gym. The classes out there are not appealing to me anyway. Stretching and boot camp are not really motivating to me. I love dancing... So, please put out a long and high intenshity cardio dance work out. Many women my age---old schoolers--- would love it. Nothing is more effective if you ask me.

Victoria---thanks for still being there to inspire me. So many people I admired as a young aerobics enthusiast are no longer on the map. You are inspiring and more beautiful than ever.
